ENTERTAINING IS OUR PASSION
EA was founded 25 years ago by individuals with a deep passion for making games. Many things have changed over the years as the gaming industryand the companyhas expanded immensely, but we are still driven by the same passion for developing, publishing, and distributing the worlds best games. Our history has been one of great success, and our future looks even brighter. Gaming has come a long way from Pac-Man & Space Invaders to modern EA Favourites like Burnout, Battlefield, Mercenaries, Dead Space, Spore, FIFA, Madden, Need for Speed and the worlds most successful game franchise, The Sims. Fuelled by our talented staff at locations right across the Globe we are united in our passion to continue shaping the future of interactive entertainment. Together we can make a difference.
Creating visually stunning, immersive games is an art that takes a tremendous amount of skill and talent. EA artists are responsible for creating the visual elements of a game, such as characters, scenery, objects, vehicles, surface textures, clothing, and even user interface components. Other Artists bring the game to life with Animation, Lighting and Visual effects and draw the gamer into an immersive experience where they can suspend disbelief and emotionally connect with the game and enjoy the ride. Some games go for a look thats as realistic as possible, while others aim for a more stylized or fantastical look. In the end, the look of a game is one of the most significant factors contributing to the overall success of the game.
Role Overview
World/Environment Modelers build the worlds (both indoor and outdoor) in-game and are responsible for building the geometry of 3D spaces and components, especially organic and inorganic environments. This artist plays an extremely important role in making the game. It's usually their art that gets the initial "WOW" when a gamer first enters the game world. Some of these artists are very technical and create very lifelike photorealistic worlds, while others create amazing new fantasy worlds. Indeed, some World/Environment Modelers combine the two, using real-world art and tweaking it to look like a more stylized environment. World/Environment Modelers may construct physical form studies or physical models as necessary. These models may be built based on art from concept drawings and/or photographs that are efficient and to correct scale.
The best World/Environment Modelers tend to have solid technical knowledge and skills and are able to push a programmer to generate new innovative looks, lighting, and moods in their levels. To do spectacular work, they usually push programmers pretty hard to achieve amazing results, but they are also flexible to change and able to modify their work if it will result in improving the overall ambiance of the world theyre creating. They do a lot of work in 3D art packages, custom level layout tools, and in texture artwork packages like Photoshop.
What skills does EA look for?
A World/Environment Modeler must have a passion for building new and innovative worlds. Their portfolio must demonstrate the following:
- An ability to think in 3D
- Drawings/sketches that display basic skills as well as any modeling and texture work related to objects, buildings, natural terrain, etc.
- Excellent sense of form, weight (mass), and volume
- Good use of light and shadow
- Breadth of artistic styles
- An understanding of optimization
- Excellent sense of scale and level of finish
EA Modelers are expected to have a proficient experience with 3D Software such as Maya. Experience with Lightwave would be a plus but not a prerequisite.
